"The Fruitface Mandala"
by Tim Slowinski

I sat today eating a banana while looking out the window at a blizzard. As
inch after inch built up, I began to feel that dread - what if it never
stopped. So little really separates humanity in terms of temperature and
weather from obliteration. A few degrees colder, a few days longer.... and
none of us would survive. To me the banana is not just a banana, it is also a
symbol of fertility, a tropical fruit from warm places far away. The banana
is taken for granted as we put it in our mouth in the middle of a blizzard,
in Alaska or Antarctica, the banana is there. It is the focal point of my
mandala. Dreamily I gaze upon it, like a prayer, sweet and ripe, sustaining.
